Anderson is the county seat and city of Anderson County in South Carolina, United States. [4] At the 2020 census, the population was 28,106.[5] And the city was located in the middle of an urbanized area that numbered 75,702. [6] It is one of the principal cities in the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin metropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 824,112 at the 2010 census. It is further included in the larger Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, South Carolina combined statistical area, with a total population of 1,266,995, at the 2010 census. It is located just off Interstate 85, 120 miles (190km) from Atlanta, and 140 miles (223 km) away from Charlotte. Anderson is the smallest city in the Upstate region. It is also known as the \"Electric City\" or the \"Friendliest City of South Carolina\". Anderson University is a private university that has approximately 3,900 students.

The Cherokee settled the area that is now Anderson. The Cherokee supported the British during the American Revolution. The Cherokee were granted their land as war reparations after the American Revolutionary War. They were then colonized. The Washington District was created by the South Carolina Legislature in 1791. It included Greenville, Anderson and Oconee Counties. The Washington District was divided into Greenville, Pendleton and Oconee districts. The newly formed Pendleton District was made up of Anderson, Pickens and Oconee. Anderson was established in 1826. Anderson Court House was incorporated in 1828. Anderson was named in honor of Robert Anderson who served in the American Revolutionary War. He also explored the Anderson area in the middle-18th century. Anderson District, later Anderson County, was established out of Pendleton in 1826.
