Poultry Farming for Food Security and Poverty Eradication Course
This 5-day training equips participants with knowledge to establish a profitable poultry farming enterprise, develop a business plan, select breeds, manage housing, control diseases, and maintain records. It targets aspiring and existing farmers, as well as agricultural extension officers.
Course Modules
- Module 1: Introduction to Poultry Farming - Business planning, regulations, small-scale production, breed classification (egg laying, meat, dual purpose), and husbandry for chickens, turkeys, geese, and ducks.
- Module 2: Poultry Nutrition and Diseases - Digestive system anatomy, nutrient sources, rationing, phase feeding. Disease management covering viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoan, and non-infectious diseases, plus stress avoidance.
- Module 3: Poultry Breeds and Housing - Housing and equipment for layers (extensive, semi-intensive, intensive systems) and broilers (brooding, feeding phases). Incubation methods (natural and artificial), egg selection, storage, and hatchability issues.
- Module 4: Chick Brooding, Economics and Marketing - Brooding techniques (canopy, infra-red, battery, hay box), rearing management. Record keeping, business planning, finance, land management, and marketing strategy development.
- Module 5: Field Visit - Practical visit to a poultry farm.
