According to NEPA's 2021 annual report, Pakistan has a total installed capacity of 39772 MW. Thermal (fossil) fuels account for 63%, hydro for 25%, renewables (wind, biomass, and solar) for 5.4%, and nuclear for 6.5%. Renewable energy resources (RE) have the ability to close the gap in the current scenario. The Ministry of Energy, in response to the government's current emphasis on renewable energies, has revised the Renewable Energy (RE), Policy 2019 as a result. The updated RE strategy states that the Pakistani government plans to get 60% of its energy, including hydro power, from renewable sources by 2030. This will reduce Pakistan's dependence on petroleum products.
The climate crisis is a central issue, and energy production is crucial for its resolution. The combustion of fossil fuels for electricity and heat is responsible for a large portion of greenhouse gases which wrap the Earth in a blanket of heat and trap it. Coal, oil and gas are the major contributors to climate change. They account for over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and almost 90% total carbon dioxide emissions.
