Arkhangelsk Oblast is a federal subject in Russia. The region includes the Arctic archipelagos Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya and the Solovetsky Islands of the White Sea. Arkhangelsk Province has also administrative jurisdiction over Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Arkhangelsk Province, including the NAO, has an area 587.400 square kilometers (2226.800 sq mi), making it the largest first-level administrative division in Europe. As of the 2010 census, its population (including NAO) was 1 227 626. [15]
Arkhangelsk is the administrative centre of the oblast. It has a population of 301,199 according to the census of 2021[16]. Severodvinsk is the second largest city, and home to Sevmash - a major shipyard of the Russian Navy. Kholmogory is the oldest settlement in the oblast, followed by Kargopol and Solvychegodsk. There are also a number Russian Orthodox monasteries such as the Antoniev Siysky Monastery.
The Plesetsk Cosmodrome (the other two being Kapustin Yar, in Astrakhan Oblast, and Yasny, in Orenburg Oblast) is one of the three spaceports that Russia has.
Arkhangelsk Oblast includes the Nenets autonomous Okrug. It borders Kirov Oblast and Vologda Oblast as well as the White, Pechora and Barents seas. Arkhangelsk Oblast includes Cape Fligely (the northernmost tip of Russia, Europe, and Eurasia), Cape Zhelaniya (the eastmost tip of Europe), and Cape Fligely (the southernmost tip of Russia). Mount Kruzenshtern, the highest point in the oblast, is located within Arkhangelsk Oblast.
