Tampa (US:/'taemp@/), is a major American city located on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The city's boundaries include Tampa Bay's north shore and Old Tampa Bay's east shore. Tampa is the capital of Hillsborough County and the largest city in Tampa Bay. According to the 2020 census, Tampa has a population 384,959, which is 52nd in the United States.
With the establishment of Fort Brooke in the 19th century, Tampa was a military hub. Vincente Martinez Ybor brought the cigar industry to Tampa, which is why Ybor City was named after him. After the Civil War, Tampa was officially incorporated as a new city in 1887. The economy of Tampa today is driven by tourism and other services such as finance, technology, construction and insurance. [11] Tampa's port, which is responsible for more than $15 billion in economic impact, is the largest in the entire state. [12]
The city is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area which is a four-county area composed of roughly 3.1 million residents,[4] making it the second-largest metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the state and the fourth largest in the Southeastern United States, behind Washington, D.C., Miami, and Atlanta. [13] The Greater Tampa Bay region is home to more than 4 million people and includes the Tampa and Sarasota metropolitan areas. The annual growth rate for Tampa is 1.63% as of 2018. [14]
