The Palace of the Parliament, also romanized as Palatul Parlamentului, is the home of the Parliament of Romania. It is located atop Dealul Spirii, Bucharest's national capital. The Palace has a height of 84 meters (276 feet),[1] and a volume 2,550,000m3 (90,000,000 cuft). The Palace of the Parliament, which weighs in at 4,098,500,000 kg (9.04 billion dollars; 4.10 millions tonnes), is the largest building in the world. It also serves as the second-largest administrative building in the globe. [3] (The Great Pyramid of Giza weighs in at about half the weight.

Anca Petrescu was the chief architect and oversaw construction. The project took 13 years to complete. [5] Nicolae Ceausescu (1918-1989), President of Communist Romania, was the first of two long-ruling heads in the country's history.[6] This was during a time when the personal cult of political worshipping and adoration grew significantly for him and his family. [7]

The palace is known for its elaborate interior, which is made up of 23 sections. It houses the Senate (Senat), and the Chamber of Deputies(Camera Deputatilor) chambers of Parliament of Romania. There are also three museums and an international conference centre. The Museum of the Palace, the Museum of Communist Totalitarianism (established 2015),[8] and the National Museum of Contemporary Art are three museums located in the Palace. Although originally called the House of the Republic (Romanian, Casa Republicii) when it was built, the palace came to be known as The People's House (Romanian, Casa Poporului), following the December 1989 Revolution. It is home to many events, including conferences and symposiums, organized by international and state bodies. However, about 70% of it remains vacant. [9][10]
