Chengdu (UK /tSeNG’du:/, US /tSNG 7] simplified Chinese pronunciation: Cheng Du; Sichuanese pronunciation pronunciation: [tsh@ntu], Standard Chinese pronunciation [[email protected]]) is also known as Chengtu. It is the capital of Sichuan's sub-provincial cities. It has been the center of Southwest China for centuries. According to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, Chengdu is a \"Beta+ (global second-tier),\" city classification. This includes Washington, D.C., and Barcelona. [8] Chengdu ranks 35th in the Global Financial Centres Index 2021, ranking it as a major financial centre in Asia-Pacific. [9]

Chengdu is central Sichuan. The \"Country of Heaven\" is located in central Sichuan. The Sanxingdui culture were among its prehistoric settlers. World Heritage Site Dujiangyan is an ancient irrigation system. The city is surrounded by the Jin River.

Chengdu was founded by the state Shu before it was incorporated into China. It is unique in that it has remained a major Chinese settlement throughout the republican, imperial and communist eras. It was also the capital of Liu Bei's Shu Han in the Three Kingdoms Era. [10] In World War II, many refugees from eastern China fled the Japanese and settled in Chengdu. With the construction of railways to Chongqing in 1952 and Kunming, Tibet, and later to Chongqing, Chengdu's role as an important link between Eastern China and Western China increased after World War II. [10] Chengdu was an important center of China's national defense industrial in the 1960s.
