In the last few years, art fairs, triennials, and biennials have attracted a lot of attention. Exhibitions are often packed with people of all ages. Here are the top five art fairs to attend in Japan between 2022 and 2023, co-sponsored with the Japan Cultural Expo.

Shiraoi in Hokkaido is a city that strives for multicultural coexistence, as it's a place where the Ainu indigenous culture still exists. Upopoy is the first Ainu-themed national museum, which will open in 2020. The "roots" refers to the entire population of this land.
The festival is in its second year. Various events and projects are taking place throughout Shiraoi. They focus on the rediscovery of Shiraoi’s land and culture. Roots & Arts uses vacant spaces and stores as exhibition venues to showcase art related to the region and community. The plans for this year include a project that will bring back the light to the Ayoro-Hana Lighthouse, which is rich in Ainu culture, as well as an audio project where OKI, who plays the Ainu traditional stringed instrument, tonkori.
