The aquaculture sector in India is growing at a rapid pace. It covers 8118 km along the coastline. Shrimps were the largest contributor to India's seafood exports in 2020-21. Fish was second. India is the second-largest aquaculture nation and third largest fish producer in the world after China.
Aquaculture is set to play an important role in India's economic growth, as the country shifts from a marine-dominated to inland-based fisheries. Inland fisheries now account for 70%, up from just 36% at the beginning of 1980s. Inland fishing has shifted away from capture-based to culture-based, which is paving the road for a sustained blue economy.
