The aquaculture sector in India is growing at a rapid pace. It covers 8118 km along the coastline. Shrimps were the largest contributor to India's seafood exports in 2020-21. Fish was second. India is the second-largest aquaculture nation and third-largest fish producer in the world after China.

Aquaculture is set to play an important role in India's economic growth, as the country shifts from a marine-dominated to an inland-dominated fisheries sector, which accounts for 70% of India's fish production. This compares to 36% at mid-1980s. Inland fishing has shifted away from capturing fish to culture-based fishing, which is paving the road for sustained growth in the blue economy.
