In an age of digital dependence, more and more aspects in our daily lives will depend on the proper function of electronic systems that are software-intensive.
The systems can be embedded, tangible and close at hand, but they are more often remote and distributed and rely on multiple layers for communication and infrastructure to function correctly. These systems are expected to provide ever-more complex functions on demand. We need to know that this functionality will be delivered safely and securely.
In certain industries, such as aerospace, defence, and transportation, the need for software that is trustworthy - and does what it's supposed to do – is well established. These sectors also have a matured approach to software design and assurance. The increased use of embedded, connected and consumer systems, as well as infrastructure and infrastructure software, means that similar approaches will be needed in a wider range of industries.
