Goldegg (also known as Goldegg im Pongau) is a municipality located in St. Johann im Pongau District in Austria, the state of Salzburg.

It is situated on a sunny plateau north of the Salzach River, the so-called « Sunny Terrace » at a distance of 60 km (37 mi) south of the City of Salzburg. In fact, the village owes its name (“Goldegg at the lake”) to a small lake at which it is located. There are approximately 2200 inhabitants living in the local area, which covers 33,1 square kilometres.

The municipality area includes Buchberg, Goldegg and Weng cadastral communities.

The area is home to archaeological finds dating back to the Hallstatt era. A settlement was found on the mountain pass that leads up the Gastein Valley and crosses the Hohe Tauern mountain range.

Goldegg Castle was constructed in the 14th century. In the conflict with Frederick the Fair, the Habsburg rival, the Wittelsbach king Louis IV. Germany, the Lords of Goldegg sided with him. The Archbishops from Salzburg were then forced to sell their estates. King Louis, who had won the 1322 Battle at Muhldorf, supported the construction of a new castle as well as a parish church. It remained a Salzburg fief. The building was given in pawn many times and finally seized in 1612. The building is now a cultural centre that offers interesting events throughout the year, such as concerts, exhibitions by regional or international artists, comedian performances, workshops, and seminars.
