Medical University of Innsbruck, a new research center with a long history, is one example of a young centre. Innsbruck was established by the Jesuits in 1562. These foundations were the basis for the University, which was inaugurated on 15 October 1669 by Emperor Leopold II (hence the name \"Leopold-Franzens University\"). To secure funding, a special tax was imposed on salt from Hall (the 'Hall salt levie'). The Medical University of Innsbruck was among the four first faculties of the University of Innsbruck (Philosophy 1669; Faculty of Law 1670; Faculty of Theology 1670; Faculty of Medicine 1670) It has been a significant landmark for the university over its 340-year history.
The University Act of 2002 separated the medical faculty from the Leopold-Franzens University. In 2004, the Medical University of Innsbruck became a university. The Med-Uni today has approximately 3,400 students and 2200 employees. It is the largest medical research and training facility in west Austria, and home university for many Tyroleans, South Tyroleans, and students from the Province.
