The Hofburg was the Habsburg's former principal imperial palace. It is located in central Vienna. It was built in 13th century, and then expanded many times. It was also the imperial winter residence. Schonbrunn Palace was its summer residence. It has been the official residence and office of the Austrian president since 1946.

The Hofburg region has been the seat of government since 1279. [1]<br/ >Over the centuries, the Hofburg has seen many additions to its structure. These include the Amalienburg and Albertina, the Imperial Chapel (Hofkapelle oder Burgkapelle), various residences (with Amalienburg or Albertina), and the imperial library.

The palace faces the Heldenplatz (Heroes Square), which was ordered by Emperor Franz Joseph I as part of the Kaiserforum [de] project, but was never completed.

As the Hofburg grew, many architects worked there, including the Italian architect-engineer Filiberto Luchese and Lodovico Burnacini, Martino and Domenico Carlone as well as the Baroque architects Lukas von Erlach and Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach and Johann Fischer von Erlach.

The name \"Castle of the Court\" means \"Castle of the Court\", and it denotes the origins of the palace's construction during the Middle Ages. The palace was originally built in 13th-century as the home of the Dukes and Duchess of Austria. It grew over the years as their power increased. It was home to the Habsburg kings, emperors, and Holy Roman Empire emperors from 1438 to 1583. From 1612 to 1806 it was again the seat of the Habsburg kings, and then, until 1918, the seat for the Emperors. The Austrian Federal President uses the palace today to continue its function as the seat for the head of state.
