Halmstad (Swedish pronunciation: ['halmsta(d),] (listen)[2]) is a port city, university, industrial, and recreational center at the mouth the Nissan River, in the province Halland, on the Swedish west coast. Halmstad is both the capital and seat of Halmstad Municipality. Out of more than 100,000 residents in the municipality, 70,480 lived here in 2019. 2019 was the ninth most populous year. Halmstad, Sweden's 19th largest city by population, is located approximately halfway between Gothenburg (the 2nd most populous) or Malmo (the 3rd). It is common to see timber framing architecture.

In 1307, Halmstad was granted its first charter as a city. The city also celebrated its 700th birthday in 2007. The oldest remains of this first town can be found at Ovraby, upstream on Nissan. This is just south of the current regiment buildings. You can still see the remains of this church today, between a defunct brick factory and a former dump.

In the 1320s the town moved to the present day town centre. At this time there were two monasteries in the town and during the 15th century the St. Nikolai church was built. Halland was the object of numerous battles, sieges and occupations by Swedish troops.

The final selection of the Union King occurred in Halmstad during the Kalmar Union, a Nordic Union that existed between Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. It lasted from 1397 to 1523.
