The IJsseldelta is part of the national Room for the River, which includes over 30 measures that aim to improve flood defenses in Dutch river areas. This project involves the lowering of the river's summer bed along a length 7.5 km near Kampen, and the creation of a bypass to the south.
Boskalis Nederland will execute the work with Van Hattum, Blankevoort and Blankevoort from the Isala Delta construction consortium. The contract was awarded by the Dutch Department of Public Works. The tendering process was not only conducted according to the normal procedure, but also included competition-oriented dialog. This is a special process that involves having a dialogue with potential contractors before the tendering process. It gives Isala Delta an understanding of the client's needs and gives the commissioning bodies an idea of the possible solution options and project risks.
Two measures are included in the project to protect the Kampen-Zwolle area from flooding. First, the river's summer bed will be lowered, which will mean that the river will run along 7.5 km between the Molenbrug Bridge and Eilandbrug bridges. Second, the Reevediep will be realized. This is a new branch of River IJssel south of Kampen towards Drontermeer lake. This will improve the quality of rural planning in the area. This will strengthen the natural flood protection of three flood plains. Reevediep will create a new nature area covering over 300 hectares. This includes new hiking and cycling paths, as well as a channel for pleasure craft. Isala Delta will also implement a Reevediep intake pipeline, a lock to pleasure craft, a bridge, and two turning locks as part of the project.
