Ancient history[edit]. Middle ages and modern age[edit]. Other ports in Barcelona[edit].

Port Vell, Catalan pronunciation: ['pord'bey], literally translated in English as 'Old Harbor,' is a waterfront port in Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain. It forms part of the Port of Barcelona. It was constructed as part of an urban revitalization program before the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It was an area with empty warehouses and railroad yards that had been neglected for many years. The complex is visited by 16 million people each year. [1]

It is now a central point of the city. The Maremagnum, a shopping mall containing bars, restaurants and cinemas, IMAX Port Vell, Europe's largest aquarium, contains 8000 fish and 11 sharks in 22 basins containing 6 million litres (1.5million gallons) seawater. Rambla de Mar is a pedestrian walkway that connects La Rambla and Port Vell. It includes a swing bridge that allows ships to enter and leave the harbour. [3]

The Laietani occupied Barcelona in the 4th century BC. An Iberian tribe that lived along the coast between the Llobregat-Tordera rivers. Their main settlement was Barkeno on Montjuic. They traded with the Greek colony of Empuries and built large grain stores.

The Romans established a colony on Mount Taber in the 1st Century AD. Montjuic's northern side was the first to experience port activity.

After the Barbarian invasion of 263, Barcino's city walls built in 263, allowed the city and its maritime activities to flourish.
