Medialab-Prado - Wikipedia

International recognition[edit].

The Medialab-Prado (sometimes abbreviated MLP) is a cultural space in Madrid (Spain). The Madrid City Council created it in 2000. It has grown to be a major center for citizen innovation. [4] It uses a participative approach and collective intelligence methods (developed at living labs) as well as fast prototyping tools like fab labs to create digital commons. [6][7]

Medialab-prado was established in 2000 by the Madrid City Council as part of the cultural center Conde duque. [1] It was renamed \"Medialab Madrid\" in 2002 to focus on the production, dissemination, and research of cultural works related to society, science, and art.

It was relocated to the basements in the former industrial building Serreria Belga (Belgian Sawmill) in 2007. In 2007 it was renamed Medialab-Prado due to its new location near the Paseo del Prado boulevard and the Prado Museum. The original construction of this industrial building was in the 1920s. It was owned by Belgian immigrants and remained in use until 2000, when it was sold on to the City Council. [8]

It was awarded an honorary award by Prix Ars Electronica in 2010. [9][10]

After extensive renovations to the Serreria building, the center began using 4000m2 and all floors of the renovated building in 2013. [8] The refurbishment won multiple awards, including the 12th Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Town Planning award and the COAM 2013 award. [11]
