The University of Granada is a public university located in the historic city of Granada. It is just 35km from the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and 65 km from Granada's tropical Mediterranean coast. In 1531, Emperor Charles V officially established the University. It was built on a centuries-old teaching tradition that dates back to the Nasrid dynasty in Granada. It is therefore one of Europe's most important universities, in terms of historical significance.

The UGR's growth has been rapid since its inception. Its faculties and schools are spread throughout the metro area. Five campuses of UGR are located in Granada. This gives it an unmistakable university feel. The University's campuses are located in North African cities Melilla and Ceuta, making it one of few truly intercontinental universities around the globe. It has strong historical ties to institutions and universities in Latin America, making it well-suited to fulfill the role of a bridge between Europe, Latin America, and North Africa.

The UGR is committed to preserving, restoring, and conserving historical buildings in Granada. \"La Madraza\", (1349), and the \"Hospital Real\", which is the seat of the UGR's Rectorate, are all located in buildings of significant historical importance. The University is a key player in the city's architectural, cultural, and economic development over the last 500 years.
