Kochi ([ko’t:Si] (listen), also known by Cochin (/’koUtSIn/ KOH–chin)[9] is a major port on the Malabar Coast of India, bordering the Laccadive Sea. This is part of the Arabian Sea. It is located in the district of Ernakulam, which is also known as Ernakulam. Kochi is the city with the highest density of inhabitants in Kerala. It has a population limit of 677,381[4] on an area of 94.9 km2 and an urban population total of more than 2.1 million. This makes it the largest and most populous metropolis in Kerala. Kochi is part of the Greater Cochin Region[10][11]. It is classified by the Government of India as a Tier II city. Kochi Municipal Corporation is the civic body that manages the city. It was established in 1967. The Greater Cochin Development Authority (12) and Goshree Islands Development Authority(GIDA) are the statutory bodies responsible for its development. [13] The current metropolitan boundaries of Kochi include the entire island of Ernakulam, Fort Kochi and the suburbs of Edapally and Kalamassery to the northeast and Tripunithura in the southeast. There are also a number of islands scattered around the Vembanad Lake.

Kochi, also known as the \"Queens of the Arabian Sea\", was a major spice trading center on the west coast India's 14th century. It maintained a trade relationship with Arab merchants since the pre-Islamic period. The Portuguese established trading ports at Cochin in 1505. Some buildings, such as the Old Harbour House, are still standing from this time. Others have been renovated more recently. The Kingdom of Cochin joined forces with the Portuguese, Ming Dynasty and Dutch to become a princely state for the British. Kochi is first in Kerala for the number of domestic and international tourists who have visited it. According to an Outlook Traveller magazine survey, the Nielsen Company ranked Kochi as the sixth most popular tourist destination in India. [16] Kochi was ranked seventh on Lonely Planet's top 10 places to visit in 2020 in October 2019. [17][18] Kochi was among the 28 Indian cities that were ranked among the top 440 global cities expected to contribute 50% of the world's GDP by 2025 in a McKinsey Global institute study. [19] JLL ranked Kochi as the most important emerging megacity in India in July 2018. [20][21]
