Port Charlotte, Florida - Wikipedia

Port Charlotte, Florida. Geography and climate[edit]. Notable people[edit].

Port Charlotte is an unincorporated area and census-designated location (CDP), in Charlotte County, Florida. At the 2010 census, it had 54,392 inhabitants. [4] It is located in the Punta Gorda Metropolitan Statistical Area of Florida.

U.S. News & World Report named Port Charlotte one of the \"10 Best Places To Retire\" in America for 2012. [5]

Nomadic Paleo-Indians were the first to call Port Charlotte home. They chased big game, such as woolly mammoth, southward during the last Ice Age around 10,000 BC. [6] Port Charlotte wasn't a coastal area at the time;[6] Florida's peninsula was larger than it is today, and was much drier. The sea level rose as the ice melted and Florida took on the climate and shape it has today. The Paleo-Indians were replaced by the Calusa, also known as the \"shell people\". The Calusa flourished along the southwest Florida coast. They numbered more than 50,000 by the time the first Spaniards arrived on the peninsula in 16th century. The Calusa were devastated by the Europeans' arrival. Smallpox, measles and other diseases decimated their population. The Seminole eventually arrived from the north and established themselves on the peninsula. [7]

Florida was given to the Spanish in 1819 and made a U.S. Territory. In 1845, Florida became the 27th State. The area surrounding Port Charlotte was largely undeveloped for the first 100 years. At the beginning of the 20th Century, maps of the region show that most roads and railroads to southwest Florida had passed through the Port Charlotte area. The area was largely uninhabited, with the exception of small farming and cattle ranches. The post-World War II boom would open people's eyes and make it possible to develop land in Florida.
