Richmond (/'rItSm@nd/), is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. It is located in the heart of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (or the Greater Richmond Region). Richmond was established in 1742, and it has been an independent municipality since 1871. The 2010 census showed that the city had a population of 204,214.[6] By 2020, Richmond's population would have grown to 226,610.[6] Richmond is now the fourth-most populous Virginia city. The Richmond Metropolitan Area, which is home to 1,260,029 people, is the third-most populous metropolitan area in Virginia.
Richmond lies at the James River's fall line, 44 miles (71 km), west of Williamsburg, and 66 miles (106 km), east of Charlottesville, 91 MI (146 km), east of Lynchburg, and 92 Mi (148 km), south of Washington, D.C. The city is surrounded by Chesterfield and Henrico counties and is located at Interstate 95 and Interstate 64. It is also surrounded by Interstate 295, Virginia State Route 150, and Virginia State Route 288. Midlothian, Chesterfield, Varina, and Sandston are the major suburbs. They are also surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties to the south and southeast. Glen Allen and Short Pump are to the east. Mechanicsville is to the northeast. [7][8]
