The Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

Brett is a neonatologist consultant at The Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, and a professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health, The University of Melbourne. He is a leader and collaborator in large clinical trials that aim to improve the outcomes of sick and preterm babies. He is currently co-leading PLATIPUS, an adaptive platform trial in Australia and New Zealand. This will revolutionise how clinical trials are conducted for preterm babies in the region.

In previous randomised trials, it was shown that intratracheal budesonide mixed with surfactant, to effectively deliver it to the lungs is a promising therapy for reducing the combined outcome of BPD or death in infants born at very low birth weight. The PLUSS study aimed to confirm the findings of previous randomised trials in a large-scale, pragmatic international, randomised study that enrolled more than 1000 infants born extremely preterm and finished recruitment in 2023. Brett will present the results and methods of the PLUSS study and their implications for clinical research and practice.
