Bologna, an ancient Roman city, was built along the Via Emilia from Rimini to Piacenza. The city thrived in the fertile flatlands. Bologna is one of Italy's best cities because the wealthy Bolognese nobility spent their money to build luxurious palaces, Gothic churches and Renaissance-style art in them.

Bologna, the capital city of Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy, is also known by its three nicknames: La Dotta (the dot), La Grassa (the grass), and La Rossa.

The University of Bologna is located in La Dotta, "the learned", and it was founded in 1088. The University of Bologna has more than 85,000 students from all over the world. It also has multiple campuses and hundreds degree programs.

La Grassa, or "the fat", is located in the breadbasket region of Italy. It is considered the food capital of Italy. Parma ham is a specialty of the city, as are balsamic vinegar and mortadella. Ragu, tortellini, and parmesan cheese. In the Quadrilatero district, gourmet delis are abundant and filled with delicious food and fresh produce.
