Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School, fell in love with Catskill and moved there in the 1830s. His former studio and home is now the Thomas Cole National Historic Site (Thomascole.org; 218 Spring St. 518/943 7465).

Catskill, which was neglected in the 1980s-90s, is now attracting artists, thanks to its Victorian houses and the surrounding area. The Brik Gallery was founded in 2005 by musician Frank Cuthbert, who transformed a 19th-century crumbling building into a venue for classical music concerts, readings, and exhibits. (473 Main St.; 518/943-0145; brikgallery.com). Open Studio, a three-year old gallery run by Argentinean artist Dina Bursztyn with her partner Julie Chase (402 Main St.; 518/943-9531). Yael McMorrow and Keith McMorrow are another Israeli transplant who cook a delicious brunch at Bell's Cafe Bistro (387 Main St.; 518/943-4070; bellscafeny.net. Omelet $9).

David Miles was inspired by Catskill to open his furniture store, Hood & Company, (432 Main St.; 518/943-1891; hoodandcompany.com). The town's architecture played a part, as well. "When I turned onto Main Street for the first time, I fell in Love," he says.
