La Tomatina, a food fighting festival in Spain's Bunol near Valencia, is held every year on the last Wednesday in August. Thousands of people from around the world come to the 'World's Biggest Food Fight,' which involves throwing more than 100 metric tons (or kilos) of overripe tomatoes in the street.
Before 2013, Bunol's population of 9,000 people was greatly increased by 40,000-50,000 people (reported as 50,000 in 2012). Since 2013, official tickets have been issued, limiting the number to 20,000 participants.
Many people choose to stay in Valencia, which is only 38km away by train or bus. Shopkeepers cover their storefronts with huge plastic sheets to prepare for the mess that is sure to ensue.
Around 12 Noon, a few trucks bring the bounty of tomatos into the center of the town. This is the Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes are from Extremadura where they're cheaper. The festival technically does not start until a brave soul climbs to the top of the two-story pole, oiled and topped with ham. In reality, this takes a very long time. The festival begins even though no one has reached the prize. Water cannons are fired to signal the start of the battle. The chaos ensues. As soon as the fight begins, it's usually every man for themselves.
