International scientists agree that geological repository can offer the long-term security and safety needed to isolate wastes with a long life from the human habitat over a long period of time. Globally, the experience gained in licensing deep geological repositories has helped to establish a structure that other countries can use to explore and start their own DGRs. In developing DGRs there are many cross-cutting issues and societal factors to consider, such as building and maintaining public trust, ensuring adequate human capacity, and transferring information and expertise.
The Seventh International Conference on Geological Repositories will be held in Busan, Korea from 27-31st May 2024. The event will bring high-level decision makers from regulatory and municipal government bodies, waste-management organisations, and public stakeholders together to review the current perspectives on geological repository developments. The seventh ICGR, which builds on the success of the previous conferences in Denver (1999), Stockholm (2003) Berne (2007) Toronto (2012) Paris (2016) and Helsinki (2022), will include university students and young professionals to ensure that the younger generations participate in and contribute to these important discussions, which will impact future generations.
