Musicians from underrepresented backgrounds are often overlooked by the piano literature and academic disciplines such as musicology or theoretical analysis. Manuel Maria Ponce's music, for example, should be included in the standard repertoire. His artistic merit can be compared with that of European composers like Johannes Brahms and Franz Liszt. Academic music has unintentionally missed out on rich sources of cultural inspiration. This session aims to raise awareness of Ponce's solo piano compositions and the history in Mexican musical culture.
Alexandro Aguilar, a pianist at the University of Idaho, studies jazz and piano under Dr. Roger McVey. Alexandro Aguilar was born in Payette Idaho, to two Mexican immigrants. His goal is to raise awareness about the plight of Mexican immigrants.Hispanic culture through education and performance.
