Rostelecom starts construction of the third stage of TEA NEXT transeurasian fiber optic cable.
MOSCOW. Rostelecom has begun construction of the third phase of the new trans-Eurasian fibre-optic communication lines, FOCLTEANEXT. The line will stretch from Torzhok in the Tver region to Kyakhta in Buryatia and extend all the way up to the eastern border of Russia with Mongolia.
Atlas Company is the operator of TEA NEXT.
The construction of this section, which has a length of approximately 6,300 km, is scheduled to be completed by the end 2025. The company stated that the "first stage of TEA NEXT will be completed, and infrastructure will be ready for the new fiber optic trunk line between major cities in Europe and beyond Siberia and Urals.".
"The TEA NEXT is one of Rostelecom's key projects. The project directly aims to increase the country's export potential in telecommunications associated with the growing traffic between Europe and Asia-Pacific," Rostelecom president Mikhail Oseevsky stated.
The total length of the Russian fiber-optic segment is estimated by the company at approximately 11,000 km. Construction of the first phase of the communication network, with a total length of approximately 560 km, was completed at the end of 2022. It connects the cities of Idritsa in the Pskov region and Torzhok in the Tver region.
The fiber-optic cable will be operationalized in phases. First and second phases, totaling about 1,400 km and connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg as well as an expansion between Idritsa, Torzhok and Idritsa, will enter commercial operation during the first quarter 2024.
