Every Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekend, we continue to welcome tens or thousands of visitors. This is how it all began...Neil and Scott Rubinstein, two young woodworkers, traveled across the Northeast to exhibit their work at different craft shows. Neil and Scott Rubinstein, fathers and woodworkers by 1981, wanted to promote and enjoy their craft, while also supporting their families. They knew what they were doing, so they decided to take matters into their hands. Instead of working 5 days a weeks for someone else, they decided that it was time to get into the promotion side of business and create an art show for exhibitors and themselves. The Woodstock Art & Crafts Fair was held twice a year, on Memorial Day and Labor Day.Artists with talent and handcrafted art are the most important ingredients for a successful craft show. Before advertising or trying to get customers, Neil and Scott concentrated on attracting exhibitors. The show would be based on the art of the artists and their work, and customers and visitors wouldn't matter as long as you have the goods. Neil and Scott, both craftsmen, were active in artist communities throughout the Northeast. They reached out to other artisans who liked the idea of having a show organized by fellow craftsmen. Woodstock, NY was the ideal location to host the show. The Rubinsteins had recently moved from the city to a small town filled with artists and musicians. Even the name brought back memories of a successful festival of the 20th Century. The show was approved after meeting with the town officials. Woodstock soon began to worry. Where would everyone park their cars? Can the town handle large crowds of people? Will the show disturb Woodstock's picturesque setting? The town asked them to move the event at the last minute. Neil and Scott were not too happy about moving the event. They had already signed an agreement with the town and they felt that "Woodstock' had become a popular festival.
