In this debut novel, a young queer Palestinian American woman tries to piece together the secrets of her great aunt. The story is a family saga that confronts questions about sexual identity, exile and lineage. The Skin and Its Girl explores desire and identity in a poetic, incisive tale. It is also a provocative look at how stories can divide, unite and define people, and even help to rebuild a family. Sarah Cypher, a debut novelist with the flair and mastery of an experienced storyteller, is a rare find.
Sarah Cypher, author of The Skin and Its Girl(Ballantine 2023), holds a MFA in Writing from Warren Wilson College where she was also a Rona Jaffe Creative Writing Fellowship in Fiction. She was raised in a Lebanese Christian home near Pittsburgh, and now lives in Washington, D.C., along with her husband.
Elise DesChamps is a voice and opera lecturer at University of Iowa School of Music. She played the leading soprano in The Machine Stops. DesChamps, a native of Montreal in Canada, is known for her rich, dark voice and sensitive musicianship. She has performed in mezzo-soprano leading roles with Opera Columbus, Cincinnati Opera and Asheville Lyric Opera.
