This is causing catastrophic events around the world, from bushfires in Australia and the US, to locusts decimating crops in parts of Africa, Middle East, and Asia. Scientists warn that we have crossed a number of tipping points which could lead to catastrophic events. For example, permafrost melting in Arctic regions is advancing, Greenland's ice sheet is melting at an unheard-of rate, and the Amazon rainforest has been deforested.
Climate change is making tropical storms, hurricanes, heatwaves, and flooding more frequent and intense than ever before. Even if greenhouse gas emissions stopped immediately, temperatures around the world would still continue to increase in coming years. It is therefore imperative that we begin now to reduce greenhouse gas emission, invest in renewable sources of energy, and phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible.
