In the spring of 1975 Mrs. Lois Theuring sent a letter to Ayden's editor, suggesting that Ayden hold a festival. After much discussion, a committee formed and the "festival" began to be planned. The citizens of Ayden were asked to vote on the name of the festival. Six names were chosen: Collard Festival, Cucumber Festival, Garden of Ayden - Almost Paradise, Harvest Festival and Progressive Ayden Day. The local newspaper printed ballots and the "Collard Festival", which won with a wide margin, was chosen. Ayden's Collard Festival was held on Saturday, September 13, 1975. Ayden hosted a street dance, a parade attended by 6,000 people, amusement rides and many booths with fun activities on that day. The Ayden collard festival, which has been around for over 50 years, takes place the first week of September. It starts on Tuesday following Labor Day and continues through Saturday. Each year, the following events are held throughout the week. Many new events are added every year.

A light frost enhances the flavor of collards.

Collard greens, a southern tradition in America, are eaten to bring prosperity in the new year. Their leaves look like folded money.
