The mixed-use Daejeon Shinsegae Expo, a central element of the redevelopment 1993 Expo Science Park is a landmark destination, providing a new entertainment centre for the city. Its rational massing responds to spectacular views and urban context.
The podium is expressed in simple volumes that vary in transparency and opacity to define the different programmatic purposes. The department store and the specialty store are separated at the lower levels by an arcade that offers direct views of the river and the mountains. Above the retail levels, the amenity areas are housed within a floating box of glass, which is shifted in order to create a cantilevered structure that shelters entrance. The public can access a landscaped rooftop terrace located above the podium. It is a great place for activities and events. A large atrium allows natural light to enter the building, while terraces offer views of the river. The complex provides patrons with a variety of entertainment and wellbeing options, including a stage for performances and areas for physical exercise.
The tower is made up of a prism. The floor plates are designed to accommodate multiple uses such as office space, hotel and observation deck. The building was designed to achieve internal synergies among these uses. On the sixth floor for instance, a skybridge connects the hotel lobby to the amenity areas, allowing guests access without having to leave the building.
