COVID-19 reversed the progress made in eradicating extreme poverty, and pushed 90 million people into poverty. Prior to the pandemic, poverty reduction had slowed. 575 millions people could be impoverished in 2030 if no action is taken. Sub-Saharan Africa would be the most affected. Global crisis is also posed by hunger and rising food prices.
Goal 2 is to eliminate hunger in the world by 2030. Since 2015, however, hunger and food security have been worsened by factors such as the pandemic and conflict. By 2022 735 millions people will be suffering from chronic hunger. 2.4 billion people will experience moderate to severe food security, an increase of 391 million. Global action is urgently needed.
The global health sector has made progress. It has met SDG targets for under-5 mortality, and AIDS-related death rates have been reduced by 52% in the last decade. Inequalities in healthcare persist despite this. They are exacerbated by crises such as COVID-19. The number of childhood vaccinations has declined and deaths from tuberculosis or malaria have increased. Investment in the health system is essential for future health threats and universal coverage.
Before the pandemic, education progress was slow. In four out of five countries, COVID-19 caused learning loss. Without action, 300 million people could be lacking basic skills by 2030 and 84 millions children may not attend school. Goal 4 is to provide free, inclusive education for all children in order to end poverty cycles and create sustainable societies.
