Kidston will be the first to convert a gold mine into an hydroelectric pumped storage facility. This will set a precedent for other similar conversions around the globe. It's also the first Australian pumped hydroplant to be constructed since 1984.
The Genex Power project, a revolutionary renewable energy and storage company, will form the foundation of a Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), which will supply clean, affordable, and firm electricity to the region.
Two gold mine pits have been operating on the site for more than 100 years. These pits will become the top and bottom reservoirs of the Kidston pumped storage facility.
It will be necessary to engineer significant underground infrastructure including a large powerhouse cave, waterway shafts, and tunnels that allow water to flow between the reservoirs.
