Listen to "Palaces & Castles in Royal Piedmont to Explore" on Spreaker. Listen on Apple, STITCHER or Spotify. The Piedmont region of Northern Italy is not as well-known as its neighbours France and Austria but it has many spectacular royal residences with impressive architecture and opulent interiors. Notes on the show: Before Italy became a republic at the beginning of the 20th century the Savoys were the Italian royal family. They spent many centuries in Turin. There are many palaces and castles in the Piedmont area. Carlotta, a Piedmont guide from Torino Discovery who is passionate about her region and its architecture, and its royal stories, joins us in sharing some of the history, and the fascinating, and breathtaking, royal residences, to explore during your Piedmont trip. This episode will teach you that Piedmont is situated in the northwest part of Italy. Turin, the capital of the region is only an hour away from France and a few hours from Milan. Piedmont gets its name from Piedi Monte which means the foot of the mountain, since Piedmont is surrounded by the Alps on one side. Turin has a population around 900,000. It's a populated/urban area. The region is a beautiful place with some wonderful wine regions. Le Langhe and Monferrato are only an hour from Turin. Turin was the first capital of Italy, which is a relatively young country. It only joined together in 1861. Piedmont is proud of its short-lived position as capital, even though it was only for a few months. The Savoy family, who had ruled a large area in Turin for more than three centuries – since the mid- 1500s – united the country under their crown. Originally, they were Dukes but then raised their title to King. They united the entire country under their crown. After a few decades, the capital was moved, not to Rome, but to Florence. Rome was not part of the kingdom when it began, but was added a decade later. It was then.
