The Aero Club of Southern California honors a legendary actor, Harrison Ford, with the 43rd Annual Howard Hughes Memorial Award. Ford will receive the award at a live ceremony on Friday, 10 June 2022 in Los Angeles, California Science Center Samuel Oschin space shuttle Endeavour Pavilion.
Harrison Ford, best known for his acting career and famed for being a pilot with both fixed-wing and rotary aircrafts, is also a licensed pilot. In the 1960s, Ford began his flight training flying a Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer. However, at $15 per hour, he was unable to afford the cost of continuing the training. He continued his lessons in the mid-1990s when he purchased a used Gulfstream II. Terry Bender was one of the pilots who taught him.
Ford shared his passion for flying with children while serving as the chairman of the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles Program for five years. Ford flew over 280 children with his DHC-2 Beaver during this period.
He commanded a medical volunteer and supply flight for Haiti earthquake survivors in 2010. Ford is a Teton County volunteer search and recovery helicopter pilot. Ford has traveled to Washington, D.C., several times to promote pilots' rights. He is an honorary member of Wings of Hope, a humanitarian aviation organization. He also serves as vice-chair of Conservation International.
