Wuhan (/wu/'haen/, US also/wu/'ha:n/, 'wu 14] simplified Chinese pronunciation: Wu Yi; traditional Chinese pronunciation: Wu Han; pinyin: Wuhan; (listen)) Hubei Province, People's Republic of China capital. [15] With a population of more than eleven million, it is the largest city of Hubei. It is also one of nine National Central Cities of China. [17]
Named Wuhan, the name derives its historical origin from the conglomeration of Wuchang Hankou and Hanyang. These three towns are collectively called the \"Three Towns of Wuhan\" or \"Wu Yi San Zhen\". Wuhan is located in eastern Jianghan Plain at the confluence with the Yangtze River and its largest tributary the Han River. It is also known as the \"Nine Provinces' Thoroughfare (Jiu Sheng Tong Qu). [1]
Wuhan was a bustling city port for commerce, trading and trade in the past. The Wuchang Uprising in 1911 was another historical event that took place in Wuhan. It saw the end of 2,000-years of dynastic rule. In 1927, Wuhan was briefly China's capital under the Kuomintang government (KMT). [18] In 1937, the city was the war capital of China. It served that role for ten more months during WWII. [19][20]Wuhan is regarded as the central China's political, economic and financial center. [16] Wuhan is a major transport hub with many railways, roads and expressways that pass through it and connect to major cities. Foreign sources refer to Wuhan as the \"Chicago of China\" because of its important role in domestic transport. [3][4][5] Wuhan is divided into three districts by the \"Golden Waterway\", the Yangtze River's Yangtze River, and the Han River. The Yangtze River crosses the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge in the city. Nearby is the Three Gorges Dam. It is the largest power station worldwide in terms of its installed capacity. Wuhan has historically been at risk of flooding. [22] The government decided to address the problem by creating ecologically-friendly absorption mechanisms. [23]
