Milano (/mI’laen/, US also [mI’la:n/] [4] Milanese [mi’la:n/] (listen); Italian Milano [mi’la:no] [5] is a northern Italian city, the capital of Lombardy and the second-most populous in Italy. The population of the city itself is approximately 1.4 million [6] and its metropolitan area has 3.26 millions. With 5.27 million people, its continuously built-up urban region (whose suburbs extend far beyond the borders of the administrative metropolis and even into Switzerland) is fourth in the EU. [8] The population of the greater Milan metropolitan area, also known as Greater Milan, is between 8.2 and 12.5 millions according to national sources. This makes it the largest metropolitan area in Italy. It is also one of the largest within the EU. [9][10]

Milan is a global leader in art, commerce and design. The Italian stock exchange Borsa Italiana is located in Milan's business district. It also houses the headquarters of international and national banks. Milan, Italy's wealthiest city, is third in GDP after Madrid and Paris, and the richest among EU non-capitalist cities. [12][13][14] Milan, along with Turin, is considered the southernmost section of the Blue Banana urban growth corridor (also known by the \"European Megalopolis\") and one of four Motors for Europe.
