The Gold Coast, a city on the Queensland coast, is located approximately 66 km (41 mi) north-southeast from Brisbane, the state capital. It lies just north of New South Wales' border. This area was inhabited before European settlement by Yugambeh language persons. Gold Coaster is the denominator for the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast, Australia's sixth-largest non-capitalist city and Queensland's second largest city, has a population of 679,127[1] as of June 2018. [3]
The Gold Coast is a popular tourist destination. It has a subtropical, sunny climate. It is home to a large film and television industry.
The Gold Coast is home to a variety of Indigenous Yugambeh clans, including the Kombumerri and Mununjali [5] clans, as well as Wangerriburra[6]. Europeans arrived at Mermaid Beach in 1823, when John Oxley, an explorer, landed there. People moved to the region in the middle of the 19th century because of the abundance red cedars in the hinterland.
Many small towns were established along the coast and in rural areas. The Nerang suburb was surveyed and made a base for industry. A town reserve was established by 1870. [7] The Burleigh Heads town reserve had been surveyed by 1873 and had seen successful land sales. [8] The small settlement at the mouth of the Nerang River was surveyed in 1875. It was known as Nerang Heads (or Nerang Creek Heads) and the first land sales were scheduled for Beenleigh. Southport gained a reputation quickly as a quiet holiday spot for the wealthy Brisbane residents. The Gold Coast region saw significant growth after the establishment of Surfers Paradise Hotel, in the late 1920s. [10][11]
