The seminar will be held from 1 September to 7 September 2023. INALCO (i.e. Inalco (i.e. 40 hours face to face).

The summer school, which takes the form of a 40-hour intensive seminar, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the sociolinguistics fields, tools, and frameworks that are available to address questions about multi- or pluralism. The training sessions are 1h30 each, with alternating literature reviews and practical workshops. Sociolinguistics is introduced, including the notions of variability, individual multilingual repertoires and linguistic resources. Also, plurilingual interaction, societal multiculturalism, linguistic ideology, etc. In postcolonial contexts, biographical and ethnographic approaches will be favored. The observations are accounted for using sociological analysis frameworks and tools. The seminar allows for a wide range of topics to be addressed: multilingualism, gender issues, health translation, or linguistic policies.

The theory part of the training will be provided by guest speakers who will present (in French or English) various perspectives on the social issues surrounding multilingualism. Postdocs are in charge of the practical workshops that provide a methodological aspect to training. The training will also provide an introduction to ethnographic approaches to multilingual fields. This includes recording and notation techniques, as well as tools for analysing plurilingual interaction and heterogeneous corpus. The terogenous corpus is thus formed. The time is allocated for the exchange of ideas with the other participants, the work in small groups or on the collective.
