The European Commission established and organized the series of conferences in 1980 (Brighton). The conference began as a strictly scientific event. As the use of biomass as a feedstock for fuels and bioenergy increased, the industrial side was added to the conference. In 1996, a technology exhibition was launched. In 2000, the EUBCE was the host of the 1st World Biomass Conference and Exhibition. As society becomes more aware of its impact on the environment one of the major themes is government policy in relation to biomass as a renewable resource.

The EUBCE has evolved into an event that focuses on the balance of sustainability, both in terms of environmental performance and economic performance for the entire chain of biomass usage. Science is also taken into consideration. This conference will cover all aspects of biomass from research to deployment, policies and policy. The exhibition places a special emphasis on the importance of a close partnership between industry, academia and research institutions.
