In the past, the Fair was held from August 13 to 23. In an attempt to avoid the earlier start of school, the Iowa State Fair Board moved the dates up by one week in 1994. The Fair ends now on the Sunday that is two weeks before Labor Day. According to calendar shifts the Fair's earliest dates are from August 7-17, and its latest dates are from August 13-23.

Iowa's State Fair is the largest annual event in the state, attracting thousands of visitors each year from the Midwest and other parts of the U.S., as well as many countries abroad. After the Fair, estimates of daily attendance are made and a count is done on tickets, including those sold daily, in advance, to exhibitors, concessionaires or children. The final attendance is determined by calculating the daily attendance estimates and counting all tickets sold, including those for exhibitors, concessionaires, campers, childrens credentials or half price.
