ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmad announced Friday that Ethiopia will receive $3Billion from the World Bank in order to support reforms in its state-controlled economy.

According to the International Monetary Fund, a preliminary agreement was reached for a $2.9 billion three-year financing package that will support Ethiopia's economic reforms.

Abiy didn't give any further details about the World Bank funding. On Twitter, Abiy stated that unnamed partners in development had pledged more than $3B to help the World Bank and IMF.

He said that the money would be used to fund macroeconomic, structural, and sectoral reforms.

Abiy stated that this reaffirms the partnership between donors and governments to transform Ethiopia into a peaceful and prosperous nation.

Eyob Tekalign tolina, Ethiopia's State Minister for Finance, didn't say when funds from the World Bank would be released. However, he told Reuters that after approval, the loan would be distributed over a three year period.
