Since ancient times, India's economy has relied on agriculture as its backbone. India's subcontinent is dotted with rivers, making it an ideal place for agriculture. It was also home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world. India is one of the most populous countries in the world. It contributes about 18% to the GDP through its agriculture sector. India is a top-10 agricultural exporter and more than half of its workforce has been directly or in indirect contact with the agriculture sector.

Telangana has experienced a rapid growth in agriculture and in other sectors. The state's farmers have benefited from projects like Mission Kakatiya. This programme has assisted in the rehabilitation of 46,531 lakes and tanks, and in the storage of 265 TMC water throughout the state over five years. It also helped to increase farm production.
