Adelaide (/'aedIleId/ [listen] AD-il-ayd]] is the capital of South Australia. It is also the fifth-most populous Australian city. Adelaide may be referred to as Greater Adelaide (including Adelaide Hills) or the Adelaide City Centre. Adelaidean, the demonym used to refer to the city and its residents. Adelaide's city centre was once inhabited by Kaurna people. It was known as Tarndanyangga (\"place the red kangaroo\"), which is now Victoria Square.

Adelaide lies north of the Fleurieu Peninsula on the Adelaide Plains, where it is located between the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east and the Gulf St Vincent to the west. The metropolitan area stretches 20 km (12 miles) from the coast to Mount Lofty Ranges' foothills. It also stretches 96km (60 mi) between Gawler and Sellicks Beach in south.

The city was named in honour of Queen Adelaide and established in 1836 to be the capital of the only British-settled province in Australia. [11] Col. William Light, one Adelaide's founding fathers designed the city center and chose the location near the River Torrens. Light's design is now national heritage and was used to plan the city's centre. It was interspersed with wide boulevards and large public spaces and completely surrounded by parks.
