Melbourne (/melb@rn/ [listen] MEL-b@rn] (Boonwurrung, Naarm) is the capital of Australia's state of Victoria and the second-most populous in Oceania and Australia. It is generally referred to the metropolitan area of Greater Melbourne (or 9,993 km2), which includes 31 local municipalities. [12] However, the name is also used for the City of Melbourne, which is located in the city's central business district. It occupies a large portion of Port Phillip Bay's eastern and northern coastlines. It also extends into the Mornington Peninsula, the hinterlands to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong and Macedon Ranges. The city has a population of over 5 million (19% of Australia's population, according to 2020). It is home to most of the country's residents, who are often called \"Melburnians\". [note 2]

Since over 40,000 years, the Melbourne area has been home of Aboriginal peoples. It also serves as a meeting point for Kulin Nation clans. [16] The traditional land owners of Melbourne, which includes five members of the Kulin Nation, are the Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri. The broader Aboriginal community uses Naarm to refer to the city. It is derived from the Boonwurrung traditional name for Port Phillip Bay. [17]
