It was once the capital of flour milling and timber. It is located on both the Mississippi River's banks and adjacent to Saint Paul, Minnesota's capital.

Dakota people lived in the city before European settlement. The construction of Fort Snelling, 1819, spurred growth along Saint Anthony Falls.
