London is the capital of England and the largest city in the United Kingdom, with a population totalling 9,002,488. It is located on the River Thames, in south-east England, at the head of an 80-mile (50-mile) estuary that runs down to the North Sea. This has been a major settlement since the beginning of the 20th century. [10] The City of London is the financial and ancient heart of the city. It was established by Romans under the name Londinium. [note 1][11] London has been used since the 19th century to refer to the metropolitan area around the core. It includes the London School of Economics, the London College of Natural and Applied Sciences, and the University College London.
