London is the capital of England and the largest city in the United Kingdom, with a population totalling 9,002,488. It is located on the River Thames, in south-east England, at the head of an 80-mile (50-mile) estuary that runs down to the North Sea. This has been a major settlement since the beginning of the 20th century. [10] The City of London is the financial and ancient heart of the city. It was established by Romans under the name Londinium. [note 1][11] London has been used since the 19th century to refer to the metropolitan area around the core. It was historically divided between Middlesex and Essex counties, Surrey, Kent and Kent. Greater London is governed by the Greater London Authority. [note 2][15] For centuries, the national government and parliament have been held by the City of Westminster to the west of London.
London is a major global city.[16] It has a strong influence on the arts, commerce and education of its citizens. It is the largest urban economy in Europe with a GDP of EUR801.66 billion,[18] and one of the most important financial centers in the world. It had the second highest number of ultra-high-net-worth people in Europe, after Paris [19] and the second largest number of billionaires in Europe, after Moscow. [20] London is home to the highest number of millionaires in Europe, as of 2021. [21] London has the largest concentration of higher education institutions in Europe. It includes the London School of Economics, the London College of Natural and Applied Sciences, and the University College London. [23] London is home to the largest number of 5-star hotels in the world. [24] London hosted the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. [25]
